For many of us gripped by wanderlust, our travel dreams never get off the ground because of hefty upfront costs.

But a new travel savings plan is designed to change that.

The Travel Wallet Experience is the brainchild of Harvey World Travel, and it allows customers to save in smaller, manageable amounts over time toward a future trip.

Managing Director Kele Lekalake explains that you can get started for as little as R500.

"You can buy a travel voucher and save toward your travel goal. Once you're ready to travel, you book with any one of our branches country-wide."

The Travel Wallet can be used for both local escapes and international adventures, and offers a better alternative than using a credit card or taking out a loan to pay for a trip, says Lelalake.

"You don't want to come back and spend the next 12 months paying for a trip."

Lekalake says the idea was inspired by the way many South Africans already save collectively.

"As South Africans, we love to save towards a common goal, we've got the stokkvel concept happening everywhere and to us this is similar."

Users have 24 months to book a trip from the date of the first purchase.
