The Zambian government and the family of former President Edgar Lungu have reached an agreement to have his remains moved to another mortuary pending the finalisation of an appeal in the Supreme Court.

The Zambian government approached the Pretoria High Court on Thursday to challenge an order that was handed down last week, which instructed that Lungu’s body be returned to a mortuary of the family’s choice.

It has been more than 10 months since the former president died in South Africa, but he has not been laid to rest due to an ongoing dispute between the family and the government over where he should be buried.

The family has approached the Supreme Court to challenge a High Court ruling that Lungu’s remains be repatriated to Zambia.
