JOHANNESBURG/PRETORIA - The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) says registrations for the upcoming elections have surpassed the 27 million mark - for the first time since the dawn of democracy.

The commission has been updating the media on its state of readiness in Pretoria on Wednesday, ahead of the second voter registration weekend.

Reflecting on the number of registrations recorded to date, the IEC said people between the ages of 30 and 39 have the highest number of registrations on record.

Chief electoral officer - Sy Mamabolo: “We are encouraged that we have reached this milestone of 27 million people on the voters’ roll, ahead of the second registration event scheduled for this weekend.”

INMATES REGISTER TO VOTE AHEAD OF SECOND REGISTRATION EVENT

At the same time, inmates at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre had their opportunity to register on Wednesday.

IEC officials arrived at the maximum-security facility earlier this morning to allow inmates to exercise their democratic right to vote in the upcoming polls.

The commission spent most of the morning at the facility easing the process for inmates with the required documentation to register.

Earlier this week, the IEC sent out a plea to families of inmates to bring the IDs belonging to their loved ones who are behind bars.

The call was heeded with a significant number of inmates registering at this facility.

An update on the number of registrations including this weekend's national registration will be announced by the commission in the next few days.
