Gauteng Human Settlements MEC to visit Diepkloof hostel after disruptive protest

JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Lebogang Maile is expected to visit the Diepkloof hostel following a disruptive service delivery protest.

Frustrated residents blocked the N12 east and N1 north interchange during morning peak traffic on Monday.

They were protesting over a lack of housing, electricity and water.

As police maintain a heavy presence in Diepkloof amid sporadic protests, Maile and the City of Johannesburg's executives’ visit to the area will be to hear the grievances of the hostel dwellers.

The community members are accusing the local government of making empty promises regarding the improvement of their living conditions.

They have also vowed to continue demonstrating until they are afforded dignified living spaces with running water and electricity.

The department said hostel refurbishments are a priority for the province, proven through Premier Panyaza Lesufi's hostels programme.
