Gauteng is rolling out new high-tech number plates in an effort to fight crime and improve road safety.

Premier Panyaza Lesufi unveiled the new plates, which are being launched in a pilot phase with government vehicles.

These plates should help curb vehicle plate cloning tied to hijackings, robberies, and fraud.

The plates have QR codes, a tamper-evident self-destructing decal, a barcode, and a province-specific design.
