JOHANNESBURG - A former prosecutor of the Johannesburg High Court has been sentenced by the same court for corruption.
Advocate Seth Nthai received R5 million as a gift in 2010 and failed to declare the gesture, which legally she shouldn’t have taken.
Nthai must now pay a R500,000 fine or spend five years in prison, suspended for three years on condition of not being convicted for the same offence.
The accused is alleged to have admitted to the offence in a founding affidavit filed in a civil matter sitting at the Limpopo High Court.
The sentencing comes after the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development has promised to act against corruption within its own department.
In March this year, Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi visited the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court, followed by other visits to local offices of the department to inspect compliance and hear directly from residents what their complaints were.
The department reported that in the 2024/2025 financial year, the department finalised more 200 labour-related matters, of those 54 officials were dismissed.
