Jose Riveiro on his time at Orlando Pirates: ‘I’m a Buccaneer forever’

Orlando Pirates gave Riveiro a legend’s send-off after his final game against Golden Arrows on Tuesday (13 May).

The Spaniard sent shockwaves through Mzansi in April after deciding not to renew his contract beyond its current term.

After three years with the Soweto club, Riveiro walks away with five trophies and 80 wins out of 132 games.

While Riveiro remains tight-lipped about his future, he reflects on his time at Pirates.

“Generally, in our profession as a football coach, it is so difficult to leave one place the way I did it yesterday (on Tuesday).”
– Jose Riveiro, former head coach – Orlando Pirates
“I am extremely happy and thankful because I think it is something exceptional… proof of a good connection between the team and the fans.”
– Jose Riveiro, former head coach – Orlando Pirates
“It’s much more than a football club. The way that people understand the brand and understand the team… It’s something that you have to live to try to explain… I am a Buccaneer forever.”
