Julius Mkhwanazi appointed himself as acting EMPD chief - Spies

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has heard that suspended EMPD acting chief, Julius Mkhwanazi, appointed himself to the position. 

Mkhwanazi is accused of abusing his powers by doing so. 

Mkhwanazi was allegedly appointed acting head of the community safety department last year, under which EMPD falls and accounts to.

Allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of powers have once again been leveled against embattled suspended EMPD acting head, Mkhwanazi. 

Mkhwanzi was officially suspended by the City of Ekurhuleni on Tuesday afternoon after being placed on special leave in October. 

This after allegations of misconduct were leveled against him before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. 

Retired EMPD deputy commissioner, Revo Spies, accused Mkhwanazi of abusing his powers, citing his self-appointment to the role of acting EMPD chief. 

"He made himself out as the acting chief, because he signed appointments and he signed directives but there’s not formal letter as the acting chief of police. He’s appointed on a formal letter as the acting HOD of community safety."

According to Spies, Mkhwanazi could serve as the acting HOD for community safety and the acting EMPD head at the same time, but had been doing so.
