Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief, Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi, has been suspended following links to alleged criminal, Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala.
Mkhwanazi has been implicated in the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, with claims emerging that he aided Matlala’s infiltration of the EMPD.
He’s accused of entering into fraudulent memoranda of understanding with Matlala’s security company.
The City of Ekurhuleni said that Mkhwanazi was suspended as a result of an internal probe into allegations of wrongdoing.
Last year, EWN reported on findings by police watchdog IPID, which recommended disciplinary action against Mkhwanazi.
The investigation looked into allegations that Mkhwanazi unlawfully entered the EMPD into an agreement with security company owner, Matlala.
The agreement allowed Matlala to be issued blue lights belonging to the city, some of which were allegedly installed on his private vehicles.
Two months ago, Brigadier Mkhwanazi went on special leave after KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi implicated him during proceedings at the Madlanga Commission.
The city has now decided to formally suspend him, citing the latest revelations of criminal collusion that have emerged at the commission of inquiry.
