Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has amplified calls for an end to women abuse as the Women for Change organisation rallies the country for a planned shutdown.

Malema made the calls while attending the traditional wedding of Zulu monarch King Misuzulu and Queen Nomzamo Myeni at the Kwakhangela Royal Palace in Nongoma in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.

Organisation Women for Change is expected to hold a march on the eve of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in honour of women and children who have been brutally killed in the country.

Civil society movement Not-In-My-Name International has also thrown its weight behind calls for gender-based violence (GBV) a national disaster.

Malema said collective action is needed to address the crisis.

“We must put a stop to the abuse of women. We must respect them; we must love them and treat them the way the king treats our queen. Once we do that, there will not be a crisis of gender-based violence. We are not like that. Just stop abusing them, they will not need a protection.”
