Motorists get reprieve in September as fuel prices drop

JOHANNESBURG - Motorists are set to save a few rands at the petrol pumps in September, following the latest fuel price adjustments. 

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy announced the changes on Monday.

The department's spokesperson, Robert Maake, said motorists and consumers will see some reprieve across the board.

"Based on current local and international factors, the fuel prices for September 2024 will be adjusted as follows: Petrol 93 (ULP & LRP): Ninety-two cents per litre (92c/l) decrease, Petrol 95 (ULP & LRP): Ninety-two cents per litre (92c/l) decrease, Diesel (0.05% sulphur): Seventy-nine cents per litre (79c/l) decrease, Diesel (0.005% sulphur): One hundred and five cents per litre (105c/l) decrease, Illuminating Paraffin (wholesale): One hundred and three cents per litre (103c/l) decrease, Maximum LPGas Retail Price: Ten cents per kilogram (10c/kg) decrease," Maake said.

Maake said lower oil prices and a stronger rand are among factors affecting prices.

"The cumulative slate amounted to a positive balance of R2.13 billion for petrol and diesel at the end of July 2024. In line with the provisions of the Self-Adjusting Slate Levy Mechanism, a slate levy of zero cents per litre remains in the price structures of petrol and diesel with effect from the 4th of September 2024," he said.
