The National Assembly has granted the ad hoc committee investigating allegations of police corruption another extension.

The extension to the end of March comes as the committee struggles to find time to complete gathering evidence from several outstanding witnesses.

The assembly adopted the motion on the extension during a virtual sitting on Tuesday.

The National Assembly met in the morning to deal exclusively with the ad hoc committee’s extension.

It’s the committee’s third extension, after receiving its first deadline extension to 28 November.

One of the reasons for the extension is how the committee has not been able to sit this week due to the State of the Nation Address (SONA) debate and the president’s response, which will take place over three days.

There were no objections to the motion that was tabled by African National Congress (ANC) chief whip Mdumiseni Ntuli.

“I’m standing here to present a draft resolution that the house extends the deadline by which the ad hoc committee to investigate allegations made by Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has to complete its task to the 31st of March 2026.”

Some of the potential witnesses who must still give evidence, include former acting commissioner Khomotso Phahlane, ANC fixer Brown Mogotsi, and a final appearance by Mkhwanazi.
