Environmental authorities have welcomed the arrest of two foreign nationals for the possession of abalone.

The suspects who have allegedly been running a drying facility were arrested in Primrose Park on Friday.

Over 6,000 units of abalone with an estimated to a street value of just over R3 million was confiscated.

The spokesperson for the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment - Thobile Zulu-Molobi - said collaborative efforts have become effective in disrupting poaching networks.

“These arrests underscore the effectiveness of joint initiatives in disrupting poaching networks, and the minister has noted that such actions are vital to the broader strategy to safeguard endangered species, and ensure sustainable fisheries management.”
