ANC releases guidelines for process of selecting municipal candidates ahead of upcoming polls

The African National Congress (ANC) has released its guidelines for the process of selecting candidates who will run for the upcoming local government elections.

These guidelines outline the minimum requirements ANC members must meet to qualify for seats in municipal councils across the country.

Among them is the requirement that all candidates must hold a matric certificate and have the necessary experience to make a meaningful contribution.

Head of the ANC's Electoral Committee, Kgalema Motlanthe, announced additional minimum requirements.

"All candidates must have no criminal records or criminal charges brought by the NPA [National Prosecuting Authority]. This, of course, includes politically related crimes committed before April 1994. No candidate shall be eligible for nomination if he or she has been found guilty by the disciplinary committee for contravening the code of conduct."

Motlanthe said the ANC’s candidate list must also be gender balanced.

"The list must also achieve 50% or more representation of women, in line with Rule 6 of the constitution, with every second candidate being a female throughout the list. It must reflect a mix of youth and age."
