It's emerged before the Madlanga Commission on Monday afternoon that some of the 121 dockets investigated by the KwaZulu-Natal political killings task team (PKTT) had serious shortcomings.
The revelation was made by SAPS component head for serious and violent crime investigation, Major-General Mary Motsepe, who concluded her testimony before the inquiry on Monday.
She said that earlier this year, during an audit of the dockets at SAPS national headquarters, several faults that compromised some cases were identified.
During her testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, Motsepe revealed several discrepancies and shortcomings identified in some of the 121 dockets that were being investigated by the PKTT.
The dockets arrived at national headquarters for auditing purposes in March this year.
They were only handed back to the PKTT in August.
She said that in some instances, it seemed that cases were being stalled.
"The oldest docket is from 2016, where suspects were identified through section 205 subpoena, but they were never arrested. We are now at 2025, but the last entry in that docket was 2023."
She claimed that in some instances, the prosecutors’ instructions were not followed, resulting in cases being unable to proceed to court.
"Four cases were found nolle prosequi because the public prosecutor's instructions were not complied with."
Motsepe conceded that she didn’t understand why the dockets were brought to SAPS headquarters for auditing in the first place.
