President Cyril Ramaphosa says there is no room for financial mismanagement as Limpopo attempts to rebuild following this week’s devastating floods.
Parts of the province are still battling heavy rain and flooding, with roads, bridges, and critical infrastructure left damaged.
Schools and clinics in several areas remain closed as the South African Weather Service (SAWS)’s red level 10 warning; the highest alert remains in place well into the weekend.
For communities hit by the floods, the immediate concern is survival and how to begin putting their lives back together.
But as the government prepares to release relief and recovery funding, the president has made it clear that accountability will be non-negotiable.
Ramaphosa visited hard-hit areas on Thursday alongside provincial leaders, saying any money allocated for repairs and reconstruction will be closely monitored.
"And the damage cost to roads and bridges will be closely monitored. "All those are being collated, and once they are collated, they will be properly analysed and will be made transparent, and it will be announced to everyone," Ramaphosa said.
The Limpopo government says damage assessments are continuing, with plans under way to provide relief and rehouse displaced families.
On the ground though, many residents say help feels distant as they face another day without homes, without power and without certainty.
