The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) is urging people to avoid buying GLP-1 products promoted on social media.
This class of medication is used to manage blood sugar levels and to support weight loss.
SAHPRA said it has identified companies and individuals illegally marketing these products and falsely claiming to be authorised by the authority.
It said the products are sourced from China, not from any warehouse in Johannesburg or Cape Town, as claimed.
Sahpra spokesperson Yuven Gounden said people should report any suspicious sales of medicines.
“SAHPRA has become aware of companies illegally marketing these products and claiming to be authorised by SAHPRA and major retail pharmacies. These claims are untrue. Many products are shipped from outside of South Africa and claim to be within our borders, which is also false."
