South Africa is proudly represented by a team of five athletes at the 2025 ISA World Para Surfing Championship, taking place from 2 to 7 November in Oceanside, California, where 24 nations are vying for top honours.
Team South Africa, under the leadership of Captain Ant Smyth, showcased remarkable talent on the opening day.
Smyth, a two-time former world champion, delivered an exceptional performance, finishing first in his initial heat with an impressive score of 15.10.
Defending world champion JP Veaudry also made waves, securing a second-place finish in a fiercely competitive heat to advance to the next round.
With favourable weather conditions and an encouraging swell expected in the days ahead, the South African team is gearing up for an exhilarating week as they join athletes from around the globe in celebrating the spirit and skill of para surfing.
"Team South Africa started off strong on Day 1 in some challenging conditions. It’s definitely putting a good foot forward for the team to build momentum for the rest of the week. The energy in the water feels quite similar to back home," said Sam Christianson, a member of the coaching team.

Lessing expressed his motivation, stating: "It’s motivating to watch the team perform; it sets the bar high for those of us still to surf."
As the championship unfolds, Team South Africa is primed to make their mark on the world stage.
