Convicted killer and rapist Thabo Bester has been moved to the Ebongweni Prison, the country’s tightest security prison.
His lawyers said that they learned this from a family friend who was planning to visit.
Bester was being held at the Kgosi Mampuru C Max facility.
This is after his brazen escape from the Mangaung private security prison in 2023, where he was serving a life sentence.
Correctional services says the transfer of inmates is a routine practice guided by security risk assessments.
The department has confirmed Bester’s transfer to the country’s only super max prison, Ebongweni.
Bester's lawyer said that he was not informed of the move before the overnight transfer.
Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says Bester will continue to receive appropriate care in line with policy prescripts.
