Mpho Mafole was an auditor in Ekurhuleni who was investigating irregular expenditure when he was targeted by assassins.

He was shot and killed on 30 June 2025 in Kempton Park while auditing a R1.8billion mobile chemical toilet and waste contract and a R2.2billion electricity and water vending contracts.

According to a piece by News24, Mafole was one of three Ekurhuleni auditors to be shot while probing these contracts.

One of these other auditors was killed and the other survived the shooting.

Mantasha says these contracts are extremely lucrative for "tenderpreneurs" and are a huge focus for auditors in Ekurhuleni.

“All of those auditors were investigating the same contract at the time that they were shot, that is all we do know at this point.”

At this stage one person has been arrested for Mafole’s murder.
