Kfm Mornings with Darren, Sherlin and Sibs speak to Cape Town mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis.
Listen below:
It's that time again when Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis pops by Kfm Mornings for a quick quarterly catch-up.
Darren started off strong in true Whackhead style with a prank by telling the mayor that his coffee was made with toilet water.
The mayor's response? A teachable moment as the Mayor says he would drink it because Cape Town’s tap water is 100% safe to drink... good to know!
The Mayor says he's currently focused on working on road infrastructure, making building permits easier to get, and working on an extortion racket being run from inside Pollsmoor Prison by placing signal blockers to block calls being made on phones smuggled in.
Hill-Lewis also explained the City's biggest priority...
"Our number one priority and everything we do, is getting people out of unemployment, and into work. That is our biggest challenge in South Africa and we cannot have a successful country as long as upwards of 30% of our country live in poverty and unemployment so tourism is a huge part of achieving that... In fact, tourism in Cape Town is one of the rare parts of the South African economy that is growing really nicely. International visitor arrivals are growing at 7% every year... Can you imagine what would happen to the South African economy if the whole economy was growing at 7%... unemployment would probably be halved in a couple of years..."
- Geordin Hill-Lewis, Mayor - Cape Town
"We want many many more overseas visitors to come to Cape Town... that is not a problem, it's a blessing and an opportunity. The stats show us that every 14 people that come to our city gets one more person into work..."
- Geordin Hill-Lewis, Mayor - Cape Town
Hill-Lewis says Capetonians can look forward to a summer with access to 37 out of 38 public swimming pools which he has been determined to repair for the season...
"I've been determined to get every one of our swimming pools open... When I became mayor, a large number of them were broken and slowly but surely more and more of them have been repaired and now for the first time on 1 December... every single pool in our city will be open and usable to the public. We have 38 of them, 37 of them will be open because one of them needs to be completely repaired... For the first time in a long time, this will be the case. Let's look to the ones we've got and make sure they're publicly available all the time and then we can look to where the areas are that need new pools for the future."
