702's John Perlman chats to Brett Michael Innes, screenwriter for 'My F*k, Marelize!' the movie.
Remember the 'My F*k, Marelize!' video that went viral several years ago?
Although the incident happened in Namibia, the phrase that sparked a thousand memes has become part of our South African lingo when someone does something ridiculous.
It showed, of course, a young woman practising her cycling skills on a huge rugby field, only to crash into a goal post, which prompted her mother's hilarious response.
Now a South African-made film inspired by the bicycle incident is set to hit our screens, and screens in Namibia, later this August.
This is the blurb: 'Heidi is a strong-willed woman hiding her cancer from her family. Marelize, her accident-prone daughter, needs to learn how to ride a bike to become an au pair in the Netherlands. How hard can that be?'
Screenwriter Brett Michael Innes actually tracked down the real family in Namibia through Facebook, and they were 'very involved' in the project.
"When the clip came up on my timeline I couldn't help but wonder what the story is... I slid into the mother's DMs emphasizing that I was not a stalker and said I'd love to chat to her and hear what was happening in her life at the time."

"I instinctively knew that the story - if there was one, would either be of how their lives were impacted by the video going viral or of what led up to it. She told me why Marelize was being recorded and that the family was going through a cancer journey. That was the story right there."

It's crazy to think that this 15-second video has inspired a heart-felt family movie, Innes says.
The curse word the now-famous phrase centres around, features only that one time in the film.
Innes gives the assurance that it's really something the whole family can go to watch to have a good laugh and actually feel moved.
The film is set for general release in South Africa and Namibia on 26 August.
