Before the national elections, McKenzie pledged to donate his salary to the Joshlin Smith Foundation.

Lester Kiewit speaks with Liam Jacobs, DA MP and Deputy Spokesperson on Sports, Arts and Culture.

Listen below.

Sport, Arts, and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has come under fire for failing to start the Joshlin Smith Foundation.

He vowed to create it after the child went missing in Saldanha and often went live on social media during the search for her as he campaigned for the elections.

He also promised to donate his entire salary to the Joshlin Smith Foundation.

However, Jacobs says the foundation has never been registered as an NPO and no application to create it has been submitted.

In response, McKenzie submitted a list of artists and groups to which he is donating his monthly salary.

Jacobs says it is great that McKenzie is donating his salary, but he still failed to follow through on his promise.

He adds that it would have only taken two months to register this NPO.

“That is a kick in the teeth for many South Africans.”

“Can we believe in Gayton after this? It is lies on top of lies.”
- Liam Jacobs, MP - DA

Kiewit believes this was an opportunistic campaign from Gayton Mackenzie and the Patriotic Alliance.

He adds that there would not be a problem if McKenzie had not made this promise, or had admitted he could not register this NPO or donate.

“I would accept if he had done a U-turn or 180, but until he has done that we must keep asking questions. Where is the Joshlin Smith Foundation?”
