JOHANNESBURG - As the African National Congress’s (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) resumes on Sunday, it's expected to finalise the party’s position on its former president, Jacob Zuma.

Zuma has been de-campaigning the ANC through his uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, calling on South Africans not to vote for the organisation in the fast-approaching general elections.

Some members of the NEC are worried that this could have dire consequences for the ANC, especially in provinces like KwaZulu-Natal and in Gauteng, where the party is on the brink of losing power.

The NEC meeting will resume in Boksburg.

Eyewitness News understands some of Zuma’s known allies in the organisation laid the groundwork for his expulsion to become a possibility.

The NEC, which is the ANC’s highest decision-making body in between conferences, is seemingly in favour of Zuma being placed on immediate suspension.

This will likely be followed by a letter asking for reasons why he should not be charged and put through disciplinary processes, thus paving a way toward a formal expulsion.

According to the party’s constitution, joining or supporting political organisations or parties other than one in alliance with the ANC is an act of misconduct.

Several ANC leaders have already written Zuma off, arguing that he knows the rules and understood that becoming the face of the MK party effectively meant an end to his 60 years of membership in the governing party.
