JOHANNESBURG - Long-serving Gauteng top cop, Elias Mawela, handed in his badge after 39 years of what the South African Police Service (SAPS) labelled uninterrupted and loyal service.

Mawela joined the force as a constable in 1984 in the Mamelodi precinct where he worked his way up the ranks to lieutenant-general in 2021.

Over the past five years, he served as a provincial commissioner on a five-year contract that has now come to an end.

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola lauded Mawela as an excellent commander who left an indelible footprint on all the units he worked with.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe: "We thank his family for allowing him to serve the SAPS. From the men and women in blue, we salute you, general, for your unwavering commitment.”
