Four school pupils were also caught in the crossfire — one died, and three others were injured.

Just in 2023, Minister of Police Bheki Cele met with local government officials in Nongoma over concerns of political killings.

The provincial government said it was concerned over the killing of yet another politician and called for swift arrest.

Hlomuka also said this recent killing of a councillor was a setback to the multi-political party intervention committee.

On Tuesday, the committee met in Abaqulusi Local Municipality to discuss political tolerance and stability.

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has since deployed national units to probe the matter in Nongoma.
