JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) notes a High Court judgment striking off the roll Speaker of the National Assembly Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula’s bid to interdict her impending arrest.
The court found her case was weak and not urgent.
Mapisa-Nqakula faces 12 counts of corruption and money laundering. She allegedly received over R4 million in kickbacks from a defence contractor during her tenure as the country’s defence minister.
Last week, the speaker filed an interdict to prevent the National Prosecuting Authority from placing her under arrest, claiming it would infringe on her dignity as a senior member of Parliament.
She took special leave from her Parliamentary duties after law enforcement officials raided her Johannesburg house as part of a broad investigation.
ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri: “The ANC is committed to respecting the rule of law, safeguarding our democracy and will then invoke sections of the ANC’s Constitution in as far as the matter involving the speaker is concerned.”
