CAPE TOWN - A political analyst attached to the Nelson Mandela University, Ntsikelelo Breakfast, says former National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula made the right call by resigning.

Mapisa-Nqakula quit the legislature on Wednesday amid the corruption allegations she's facing for alleged tender bribes she received as the former defence minister.

The former Speaker said she should be presumed innocent of the charges she's facing until proven guilty.

Breakfast said resigning was the only way out of the quagmire that Mapisa-Nqakula found herself in.

"Though the question still stands whether was she pushed or did she jump but I think this has a political meaning because the ANC will use the latest development to project itself as taking a stand against corruption and not protecting its senior leaders. On the other hand, opposition parties may take a swipe at the party by saying that senior members of the ANC are embroiled in serious allegations of corruption."
