Creecy expected to visit families of 11 missing fisherman presumed dead

CAPE TOWN - Minister of Forestry and Fisheries Barbara Creecy is expected to visit the families of the 11 fishermen who are presumed dead after their boat sank off the Cape coast.

On Friday, a fishing vessel capsized off the Hout Bay coast, and 11 of the 20 fishermen on board have still not been recovered.

An investigation into the cause of the incident is under way.

Creecy has also expressed her condolences to the family of another fisherman who died when a boat he was in capsized on the West Coast on Monday.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for damaging waves in parts of the Cape.

National Sea Rescue Institute spokesperson Craig Lambinon urged fishermen to be vigilant when venturing into the sea.

"We always encourage all mariners to check the weather services broadcast, especially weather alerts, and to always wear your life jacket while you're at sea and have safety equipment with you."
