Nickelodeon’s animated show ‘Spongebob Squarepants’ is set to air in Afrikaans.

This is part of the show’s 25th anniversary and the Nick In Your Language initiative, aimed at promoting local languages.

The Afrikaans version will air on NickToons on weekdays from 17 June at 8 am, with repeats at 3 pm.

In December 2022, ‘Spongebob Squarepants’ and ‘Paw Patrol’ became available in isiZulu on NickToons (DStv 308).

“Indigenous languages make up the majority of the languages that are under threat and it is believed that one indigenous language dies every two weeks,” the channel explains.

“These sobering numbers highlight the importance of promoting and preserving our local languages and ensuring that our kids are learning to speak local languages and keep them alive.”

To select your preferred language press ‘options’ on your DStv remote, scroll down to ‘language’ and select your preferred language.

947’s Mo Flava took a swing at translating the ‘Spongebob Squarepants’ iconic theme song into Afrikaans.
