CAPE TOWN - The African National Congress (ANC)'s head of elections in the Western Cape and provincial legislature leader, Cameron Dugmore, is headed to Parliament.

However, his party’s dismal showing in the national election means several long-serving Western Cape deployees won’t be joining him there.

On Thursday, the Chief Justice will officially receive the lists of designated MPs from the Electoral Commission (IEC), and in turn, hand them over to the secretary to Parliament in preparation for their swearing-in.

Dugmore, a veteran ANC member of the Western Cape legislature, has been a vociferous challenger of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the province as the opposition leader in the House.

But he's looking forward to his new challenge.

"It's going to be a critical period for our country to ensure that the progressive legislative agenda is pursued and most importantly, to focus on implementation which impacts positively on the lives of all South Africans," Dugmore said.

However, Dugmore’s parliamentary debut is bittersweet.

His long-standing comrades who also rose from this provincial legislature to the National Assembly have not made the cut from the national list to return for another term.

They include former deputy minister of agriculture, Mcebisi Skwatsha, and former parliamentary chairpersons, Richard Dyantyi and Faiez Jacobs.

"I think it's a very difficult situation for everyone to deal with," Dugmore said.

Meanwhile, the DA will be sending its former provincial party leader and MEC, Bonginkosi Madikizela, to join Dugmore as a parliamentary newcomer, as well as outspoken anti-crime activist, Ian Cameron.
