DURBAN - The election of a new eThekwini mayor has been postponed over outstanding issues including the absence of the chief magistrate responsible for swearing in members.
Council Speaker Thabani Nyawose confirmed the delay on Tuesday, saying the council was not fully prepared for the election.
The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) metro needs to fill the vacancy following the resignation of Mxolisi Kaunda two weeks ago.
Nyawose spoke to journalists on the sidelines of the meeting on Tuesday.
“Yes, it’s true we were expecting to elect our mayor today [Tuesday], but I can confirm to you that we are not going to elect the mayor.”
He said the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC)’s absence also contributed to the delay.
“I could not secure the IEC chief to come and assist me here. He has indicated that there are other urgent commitments or engagement they have to attend as the IEC.”
