7 ways to give back for Mandela Day

On 18 July, people across South Africa will give 67 minutes of their time, or some other charitable contribution, to celebrate the late Nelson Mandela.

This Mandela Day comes with the significant milestone of celebrating 30 years of democracy.

If you haven’t decided how you want to give back to your community for Mandela Day, here are seven events to take part in.

Mandela Day Walk and Run

The Mandela Day Walk and Run gives you a chance to do something good for your health while also inspiring change within the community.

Date: 20 July 2024

Location: DP World Wanderers Stadium

Distances: 5km, 10km and 21km

Entries: R100 to R200

You can also participate in a virtual run from anywhere in the world.

67 Blankets

In this icy cold winter, 67 Blankets is playing its part in warming the hearts and bodies of those in need.

How to participate:

-          Knit or crochet a blanket, scarf, or square to donate.

-          Donate wool, hooks, or needles

-          Make an EFT donation

-          ‘Adopt’ a knitter

Ladles of Love

Ladles of Love is trying to break the record for the most volunteers at a Mandela Day 67-minute service.

Date: 18 July 2024

Pick a time slot to come out and help the team across several activities including:

  • Making Sandwiches
  • Fill Buckets of Hope
  • Craft Toys
  • Create Books and Posters
  • Pack Nutrition Boxes
  • Innovate Food Gardens

Ticket: R200 (your ticket cost is a donation, providing 40 healthy meals to children in need)

Location: Constitution Hill, Johannesburg

The Johannesburg Children’s Home

Give some TLC to the family cottages at the Johannesburg Children’s Home by volunteering 67 minutes of your time.

Date: All of July 2024

How to participate:

  •        Clean cottages
  •         Work in the food garden
  •         Join outdoor painting projects
  •         Donate cash or items off of their wish list

Woodrock Animal Rescue

Leave your mark on the mural and spend the day with the rescue’s animals.

The Cotland’s Comedy Show is hosting its ‘Laugh for 67 Minutes, Change a Child’s Life’ show.
