The shootout comes less than 24 hours after police shot and killed one suspect linked to an ATM bombing at a store on Thursday. A getaway driver was also arrested.
The police's intelligence operatives led an operation in Empangeni. They've been tracking the movements of three suspects wanted in connection with at least 10 murders across the province.
Officers said when they announced their presence, they were met with a volley of bullets.
“When the police announced their presence, the suspects opened fire, sparking a shootout which ended with the three suspects fatally wounded,” said police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda.
Netshiunda said two firearms were recovered from the scene.
