CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town has encouraged drivers who are struggling to stop drinking to book themselves into rehab.
Mayco Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said the city had free programmes at clinics for those who wanted to recover from alcohol abuse.
Smith shared his sentiments after traffic officers made 60 arrests for drunk driving in the past week.
"Drink driving destroys lives, apart from the astronomical economic losses in terms of injuries and fatalities. If you cannot make the responsible choice to drive sober, then choose to get help."
Smith said in the last seven days, 399 people were arrested, with more than 40,000 fines issued for various traffic violations.
