CAPE TOWN - The OR Tambo District Municipality in the Eastern Cape has cautioned residents from starting uncontrolled fires following the weather warning of strong winds set to hit the province.
The SA Weather Services has issued a level 6 alert for damaging winds for parts of the provinces.
This includes municipalities under the district municipality - which is no stranger to weather-related disasters.
Spokesperson Zimkhitha Macingwane warns uncontrolled fires may be regrettable.
“Following the weather warning by the SA Weather Services, we’d like to warn members of the community not to start any fires because the rate and speed of the wind currently may cause unnecessary damage.”
Motorists have also been urged to be alert.
“We are requesting everyone to be extra vigilant during this time and those who are driving on the road to also be on the lookout,” added Macingwane.
Last month, wildfires killed over 10 people including six firefighters in KwaZulu-Natal.
