Several areas in the province are already under strain, with Knysna and Plettenberg Bay having declared states of disaster in recent months.

George has also introduced water restrictions, becoming the first municipality in the province to do so late last year.

Meanwhile, the city of cape town is also facing increasing pressure on its water supply, with below-average rainfall forecast for the coming season.

Provincial environmental affairs MEC Anton Bredell is urging residents to conserve water wherever possible.

"I want to urge all residents and visitors to the western cape to treat water with respect and not to waste even a drop."
