Withdrawing case against 95 Libyans not a reflection of inability to prosecute crimes: NPA

JOHANNESBURG - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said withdrawing a case against 95 Libyans arrested at an illegal military camp in Mpumalanga was not a reflection of an inability to prosecute crimes. 

On Thursday, the director of public prosecutions in the province found that there was not enough evidence to prosecute the group.

The Libyans were arrested during a raid at a farm in White River near Mbombela.

The matter has been struck off the roll and the Libyans have been handed over to the Department of Home Affairs pending their deportation. 

Mpumalanga NPA spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said: “The NPA has coordinated with its criminal justice partners and the 95 accused will be under the custody of the Department of Home Affairs that will facilitate the deportation process.”
