SOWETO - Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero launched the ‘accelerated service delivery' programme in Soweto on Friday.
The programme includes fixing streetlights, painting roads, repairing potholes, and ensuring the streets of Soweto are kept clean.
Lesufi said the programme would be implemented every Friday in every community in the City of Johannesburg.
The Gauteng government’s Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers, waste pickers and electricians were part of the initiative.
Lesufi said the programme is designed to adopt a proactive approach to addressing community issues, in contrast to the government's traditional reactive approach to service delivery.
“We want to really change the way government has been operating where we call meetings and told by people that they don't have water or electricity. We are bringing all departments of government. We are going street by street to fix the problems.”
Lesufi said the days of communities having to beg for service delivery were over, adding that the government would now address issues promptly.
Both Lesufi and Morero were set to visit water reservoirs that supply communities in Soweto.
