DURBAN - The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Treasury wants to buy cars for members of the executive council to save money.
This comes after the department’s investigation, centred around vehicles, revealing that nearly R17 million was used to hire cars for MECs in a period of four months.
Department spokesperson Nkosikhona Duma: “A recent investigation undertaken by the MEC indicates that the seventh administration has inherited a legacy of wasteful expenditure. The investigation centres around vehicle rentals for MECs in the province. Over four months, R16.8 million was spent on the hire of vehicles for 11 provincial government departments.”
He said the department also flagged its own cost of over a million rand in the same period.
“In the MEC’s very own department of Treasury, just over a million rand was spent between April and July this year. This is expenditure incurred by his predecessor.”
The department said it was planning to use R12 million to purchase the cars in a bid to save R27 million.
