Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says Eskom is making progress toward ensuring a stable electricity supply following the extension of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station’s operating licence.
Earlier this month, the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) approved a 20-year licence extension for both Koeberg Unit 1 and Unit 2, allowing them to continue supplying power to the national grid until 2045.
The nuclear power station has long been regarded as South Africa’s most reliable power station, known for its strong performance and consistent electricity generation.
Speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria on Sunday, Ramokgopa welcomed the strides in strengthening the country’s energy security.
“This is going to support our transition, the Just Energy Transition. The big part of that is to ensure there is energy security and to ensure the generation of electricity is also clean, as we all know that nuclear is clean. So this has got major advantages to allow us to ensure that as we pivot to the next generation of South Africa’s energy complex, nuclear continues to be a big part of it.”
