CAPE TOWN - An inquest docket has been opened after a suspect linked to the latest mass murder case in Eastern Cape was shot and killed by police.

Officers said the man was armed and threatened to shoot them during his arrest in New Brighton on Thursday.

He allegedly shot dead five people in a house in an informal settlement the day before.

At least 28 people have been killed in mass shootings in the province in over a month.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Majola Nkohli, said: "It is alleged that at about 21:30, police were summoned to a complaint of shooting at a shack in Chris Hani informal settlement. On police arrival at the scene, they found the bodies of five men."
