'Rhino Man’ premiers on 7 November at 6:30 pm at Nu Metro Cinema in Canal Walk.

Lester Kiewit speaks to John Jurko II, the director and producer of the documentary 'Rhino Man'.

Listen below.

Largely filmed in South Africa, 'Rhino Man' is a documentary that traces the heroic journey of rangers risking their lives to protect South Africa's rhinos from poachers.

It's a race to inspire the next generation to care for the rhinos and the natural world, as poachers and habitat loss wipe out one species after another.

Greed, desperation, and violence are met with an even stronger set of forces: love, dedication, and a willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice for a better future.

The film features illuminating interview segments from Anton Mzimba (the documentary's main character who died in the crossfire of a rhino being poached in 2022), the head ranger of the Timbavati.

Sobering statistics are painted across the screen: rhinos are being poached at a rate of one to two every day, and early on the audience is informed that what is happening 'is a systematic deletion of the rhino'.

The Game Rangers Association of Africa (GRAA) calls the film a 'must-watch'.

"We started this back in 2015... Rangers are out there risking their lives every day, in the shadows, protecting this wildlife, but no one knew who they were, why they were out there and what they were risking... So, we made a promise at the time to tell their stories and get them in front of the limelight so people could know what they are doing and support them."

Jurko II will be present for a Q&A after the screening.
