JOHANNESBURG - Eskom has announced that customers with pre-paid electricity meters no longer need to queue in order to upgrade their meter boxes.

They have been advised to instead buy tokens from legal vendors, which will automatically assist with upgrading their current metres.

This week hundreds of customers have been lining up at the utility’s offices in a rush to meet the deadline this Sunday.

One death has been recorded in the last-minute rush, after a man collapsed while waiting in line at a pop-up centre in Orlando East, Soweto.

Eskom spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena, explained: "They must go and buy from legal vendors — your Shoprite, your Pick n Pay, and filling stations, those should be your legal vendors."
