Firefighters contain informal settlement blaze near Joburg's Bryanston suburb

JOHANNESBURG - Firefighters responded to a blaze that engulfed homes on the corner of Peter Place and Winnie Mandela Drive at the Jaguar informal settlement.
Hundreds of shacks have been destroyed by the blaze that was sparked by one of the dwellings on Monday. It spread quickly shortly after 1pm.
In video footage sent by residents nearby and motorists driving past, thick plumes of smoke could be seen billowing from the area.
Firefighters worked hard to contain the blaze and no injuries have been reported at the moment.
Johannesburg Emergency Management Services's Xolile Khumalo explained earlier: “The residents of Johannesburg are advised to avoid the following streets: Peter Place, Winnie Mandela and 14th Street.”
Firefighters from the City of Joburg were on the scene attending to the blaze that had been contained.
