CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile said that the number of police officers who found themselves on the wrong side of the law in the province was concerning.
Patekile was reacting to the arrest of a 41-year-old policeman on rape charges.
He's accused of sexually assaulting a 26-year-old woman who was in the holding cells at the Mfuleni Police Station last week Thursday.
The woman alleges that she was raped by the accused in an empty cell, and then taken back to her cell where she was locked up with seven other women.
The officer made his first court appearance at the Blue Downs Magistrates Court on Monday.
The provincial police commissioner said that incidents of this nature were upsetting and embarrassing for the police service.
"We want to condemn this to all our members because a police station is where you should feel safe when you're brought to the police station. The officer is on suspension and once he's released, then other disciplinary matters will follow."
