Pippa Hudson interviews Andries Keyser, a train specialist and founder of the Winelands Light Railway.
Listen below.
The iconic mini blue steam train at Mouille Point is back, boasting a fresh and modernised look after 66 years of captivating visitors.
Dubbed the 'last remaining seaside miniature railway attraction in South Africa', this beloved train has faced some challenges over the years, with the salty ocean air taking a toll on its mechanical and steel components.
"It's probably the oldest continuously running tourist railway attraction in this country..."
- Andries Keyser, Train specialist – Winelands Light Railway
However, thanks to a major upgrade, this marks the fifth version of the train, says Keyser, which originally debuted in the 1940s as a steam engine that ran along the beachfront to help raise funds for the war effort.
Over the decades, it has evolved into the vibrant, updated attraction visitors can enjoy today.
Tickets cost R45 per person.

"It's always been a project to generate funds for community projects and charity work."
