December often proves to be a costly month, even if you aren't indulging in luxuries.

While the festive season is synonymous with financial stress, it doesn't have to be.

In his latest blog post, Roelofse shares four practical steps to enjoy this time of the year without overspending.

1. Create a detailed holiday budget

Develop a comprehensive holiday budget before shopping to keep your expenses in check for gifts, decorations, food, and travel.

Prioritise your needs and maintain realistic expectations to handle unforeseen costs better and effectively monitor your spending.

2. Set spending limits for gifts

Set spending limits; consider homemade or experiential gifts; propose gift exchanges with loved ones to manage generosity without financial strain.

3. Avoid impulse purchases

During the festive season, create a shopping list; avoid shopping when stressed; and allow a 24-hour cooling-off period for unplanned purchases to ensure necessity.

4. Utilise cash or prepaid cards

Consider using cash or prepaid cards for holiday spending to control your budget.

Set a specific amount of cash for expenses, leaving credit cards at home.

This limits overspending and reminds you to stick to your budget.

Load prepaid cards with your holiday budget to stay on track.

"If you just navigate yourself through carefully...we're not saying become the Grinch. We're saying become that sensible person who gets through the holiday period well within their means."
- Paul Roelofse, certified financial planner
