CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town's events permit office has finalised permits for the Cape Malay Choir Board road march and the Cape Town street parade.
Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, said that the city had worked diligently with roleplayers to ensure roads were clear for the troupes and for spectators to enjoy the festivities in a safe environment.
"As the City of Cape Town, we are proud to collaborate with the Cape Malay Choir Board and the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association by providing financial and logistical support to ensure we continue to honour these traditions for many more years to come."
The Cape Malay road march ushered in the new year with traditional Malay music and marching, with several choirs taking to the streets on Tuesday night.
The Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association will showcase the annual Kaapse Klopse competitions at Athlone Stadium on New Year's Day on Wednesday and the Cape Town street parade on Saturday, the fourth of January.
Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association director, Muneeb Gambeno, said that both events promise to showcase the best of Cape Town’s vibrant heritage, music and traditions.
"Athlone Stadium is sold out. We are expecting 20,000 people. Even though it's sold out people should try and come down to the Cape Town Hollywoodbets street parade on Saturday. That's a free event... and engage with the troupes, engage with the community. It's something that every Capetonian should experience at least once in their life."
