CAPE TOWN - Farming products company, Tal-Tec, says climate change will need to be a major priority for the agricultural sector this year if it’s going to deliver on food security and job creation.
CEO Greg Talbot said that climate change was a growing threat to the sector.
Talbot said that the rapid change in weather conditions was also affecting the soil as well as the growth rate of fruits and vegetables.
Tal-Tec, a company that provides farmers with equipment to handle their livestock, said that given that agricultural production declined in 2024, this year the company would focus on managing the risk climate changes pose to the sector.
Talbot said that as climate change intensifies, it is amplifying inconsistent weather patterns.
Drought is becoming a re-occurring factor within the sector.
Tal-Tec reported that in 2024, many of South Africa’s litchi harvests were destroyed because of the change in weather conditions.
To try and combat climate change, farmers are now focusing on their water usage as well as maintaining the health of their soil.
